In recent weeks, the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) safety has surged to the forefront of American political discussions. This follows urgent warnings from AI researchers about potential catastrophic risks associated with rapidly developing AI technologies. Jacob Coxon, a former AI researcher for Anthropic and OpenAI, highlighted the hazards, expressing concern over the creation of ‘superhuman systems.’ These systems, he warned, could soon hack into anything, disrupt industries overnight, and amass real power and resources.
The alarms raised by Coxon have spurred lawmakers, AI experts, and industry leaders to advocate for slowing AI development to reduce risks. As President, Donald Trump plays a vital role in shaping government responses. Yet, he has minimized these dangers, emphasizing that only a ‘STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT’ is needed to govern AI development.
As Congress reconvenes, there is increasing pressure for AI regulation. This issue gains importance for voters as they consider the upcoming midterms in 2026 and potential presidential candidates for 2028. How Trump addresses this matter could have significant political ramifications.
Trump had stated in a post on Truth Social that there is a conspiracy against AI and data centers, suggesting a focus on regulatory powers over companies rather than slowing technology advancements. He asserted that the U.S., not China, leads in AI, and those conspiring against AI should beware.
Donald Trump Criticizes Push to Slow AI Development
Trump’s views contrast with public opinion. A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll, conducted before recent AI warnings, showed that only 23% of Americans believe Trump has handled AI issues well. Conversely, 57% feel his approach is inadequate.
Among Democrats, only 5% approve of Trump’s handling of AI. Independents are similarly critical, with only 7% approval. Even within the Republican base, only 51% view his performance positively. Younger Americans are particularly dissatisfied, with merely 10% of those aged 18 to 29 considering Trump effective in AI matters.
A separate YouGov poll indicated that 33% of Americans believe Trump’s AI policies harm the economy, while 18% see them as beneficial. CNN analyst Harry Enten noted the dissonance between Trump’s stance and voter sentiment, underscoring the divergent views on this issue.
AI Researchers, Leaders Sound Alarm
Coxon’s warning about AI dangers has resonated widely, with his post viewed over 171 million times. Industry leaders, like Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Elon Musk, echo the need for a careful approach to AI’s development. Amodei emphasized the importance of risk prevention pacing with capability advancements.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, also called for ensuring AI alignment and safety measures. He stressed the risk of losing control of AI and the need for models to prioritize human well-being.
Growing Calls for AI Action
Legislators are actively calling for federal action. Representative Greg Casar and Senator Bernie Sanders have introduced a bill to halt superintelligent AI development and maintain an AI advancement pause until safety regulations are established. Sanders urged diplomatic efforts to reach a global AI agreement.
Representative Yassamin Ansari advocates for federal regulation and global coordination, suggesting Trump lead efforts to develop a worldwide AI framework that secures national and international safety.
Despite these initiatives, clarity on legislative results remains uncertain. Congress faces significant decisions amid public concerns about AI-driven mass unemployment and its rapidly accelerating progress.
Half of Americans expressed worry that AI could lead to human extinction. A YouGov poll found that 73% fear AI-induced job loss, while 67% believe AI is advancing too swiftly.
What Happens Next
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s stance on AI remains undefined, although calls for addressing AI safety persist. The Pro-Human Assembly’s event, featuring bipartisan lawmakers, aims to draw attention to AI risks. Speakers will underscore AI’s role in reshaping political divides.
