Renowned costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie, celebrated for his dazzling celebrity outfits, passed away at age 87. Known as the “Sultan of Sequins,” Mackie was a defining presence in 20th-century entertainment.
Mackie’s official Instagram account announced his passing, sharing, “With a heavy heart, we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He fulfilled his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which was all he ever wanted.” His unique creations will continue to influence the fashion world.
Mackie had a career spanning over six decades, dressing stars from Bette Midler to Taylor Swift. His landmark designs included Marilyn Monroe’s rhinestone sheath dress worn for President Kennedy in 1962, and Cher’s 1986 Oscar ensemble with a feathered Mohawk headdress. “The way you dress communicates who you are,” Mackie stated in 1990.
He had a deep passion for crafting unique looks for entertainers, commenting on fashion shows in a 2025 podcast interview: “Designing for runway tells no story. It is about making something appealing to buy.” His childhood in Southern California inspired him, as glamorous Hollywood, not high fashion magazines, fueled his imagination.
Mackie dropped out of the Chouinard Art Institute, now part of the California Institute of the Arts, after being discovered by designer Edith Head. He soon joined Paramount Studios. Here, he developed long-standing partnerships with stars like Whitney Houston and Diana Ross. For “The Carol Burnett Show,” he created around 17,000 costumes, including Burnett’s famed curtain rod dress.
Elton John donned one of Mackie’s theatrical creations, a Donald Duck costume, during a 1980 Central Park concert. The outfit, which included webbed booties, was as challenging as it was striking. John fondly recounted the moment as ludicrous yet spectacular in the film “Who Is Mackie?”
In the 21st century, Mackie continued to influence fashion, dressing modern icons like Miley Cyrus and Zendaya. He collaborated with Mattel on a Barbie doll line and was honored with 10 Emmy Awards. He received lifetime achievement awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” where he served as the first guest host.
RuPaul highlighted Mackie’s talent in a 2024 documentary, “Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion,” stating, “His work has a rhythm and choice of colors unmatched by others, channeling the divine.” Mackie’s legacy remains irreplaceable in the world of costume design.
