The college football season’s second week was indeed action-packed and filled with surprises. Among the unexpected results was Oklahoma State’s triumph over the heavily favored Oregon Ducks. This upset caught analysts off guard, especially since Oregon was projected as a leading contender this year.
Oregon’s preseason expectations were high, fueled by a strong recruiting class including four five-star athletes. Dante Moore’s decision to return as quarterback added to the optimism surrounding the team. Despite head coach Dan Lanning having to replace two coordinators, internal promotions were believed to ease the transition.
However, Oregon struggled in its game against Boise State, barely securing a 34-27 victory. Things took a turn for the worse in the face-off with Oklahoma State. Though Oregon’s defense managed multiple turnovers, the Cowboys controlled the game, executing 83 plays for a total of 554 yards. This included a substantial 237 rushing yards, averaging nearly six yards per carry.
Contrarily, Oregon’s offensive line couldn’t find its footing. They averaged a meager three yards per carry, with only 281 total yards and 4.8 yards per play. Oklahoma State’s performance was dominant and not simply a fluke.
Well then. That’s interesting, isn’t it? It’s like in baseball, when a pitcher tips his pitches and lets hitters know what’s coming.
Oklahoma State linebacker Tate Romney revealed postgame that Oregon’s offensive line had noticeable tendencies. These cues allowed the Cowboys to anticipate plays and gain an edge defensively. Romney stated, “Their tendencies gave us key insights into run or pass scenarios.”
Moreover, Landon Tengwall further analyzed Dante Moore’s pre-snap setups, which differed between passing and running plays. It’s uncertain if Cowboys exploited this specific tell, but it raises the question whether Oregon inadvertently aided their opponents.
While recognizing an opposing team’s signals can provide insights, it doesn’t guarantee success if individual matchups aren’t won on the field. Oklahoma State’s offense also managed to penetrate Oregon’s defenses smoothly, indicating broader weaknesses.
Looking ahead, Oregon faces Portland State next week, offering a chance to adjust before tackling No. 12 USC on September 26. Coach Lanning and his staff aim to eliminate predictability and improve performance.
