A search is ongoing in the South Pacific after a passenger ferry sank between Ambae and Santo islands in Vanuatu. This nation lies east of Australia. The disaster claimed at least one life and left over 30 people missing, stated Vanuatu’s Ministry of the Prime Minister on Facebook.
The ferry, MV Matui, was traveling with 47 people onboard when it sank. Rescuers saved 15 survivors and found one body. Authorities have now focused their search on Vanuatu’s southeastern coastline, where survivors might have been carried by currents, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).
Matai Seremaiah, a Parliament member for Luganville, confirmed that search efforts continue. In a statement, the ministry expressed condolences: “Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones. Survivors, we pray for your strength and recovery. Those with missing family members, please know the nation stands with you in this time of grief.”

Retired Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport highlighted factors affecting survival chances such as water temperature, injuries, and access to lifesaving equipment. “They may be clinging to debris,” he mentioned, warning that without food or water, and under the threat of hypothermia, survival chances decrease over time.
The ministry suggested the tragedy resulted from overlooked marine warnings about strong winds and potential overloading of the vessel. Emphasizing safety, it stated, “The safety of life at sea must come first. Ship owners must ensure their vessels are seaworthy and equipped with proper safety gear and communication systems. Ignoring warnings puts lives at risk.” A full investigation aims to assess the facts and prevent similar tragedies.
Previously, on August 30, another ferry disaster occurred when the Filo Jet catamaran capsized off northern Cyprus. This incident involved 267 passengers, leaving 14 dead and 14 missing, while 239 were rescued. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the sinking.
