Chicago White Sox Seek Resilience Amid Playoff Push
Chris Getz, the general manager of the Chicago White Sox, noted significant differences in the team’s recent travels compared to past years. At Progressive Field on Monday, Getz expressed optimism about the White Sox’s progress and the opportunity they have in their current series against the Cleveland Guardians.
Current Standing and Recent Performance
The White Sox are currently leading the American League Central, narrowly ahead of the Guardians. However, they have encountered a rough patch, losing five out of their last six games and ten of their last fourteen. Despite this, Getz highlighted the team’s resilience, mentioning their ability to recover from setbacks.
“As a whole, it’s been a team that’s been so resilient. Just when you think that perhaps they’re going to be down and it’s going to take a while to get out of it, they always bounce back.”
He acknowledged the pressure of the current season but maintained confidence in the team’s potential to overcome challenges.
Strategy and Performance
Getz noted issues with consistency in either hitting or pitching in recent games. He emphasized the need for the team to realign their performance to their earlier successful strategies.
The general manager also spoke about Colson Montgomery’s defensive play against José Ramírez during the first inning at Progressive Field on September 14, 2026.
Scouting and Player Evaluation
In a discussion with reporters, Getz talked about future plans for the amateur scouting division after director Mike Shirley’s recent resignation. He assured that changes would not only be limited to scouting but also the player-evaluation process as a whole.
Reports surfaced about Shirley allegedly making inappropriate comments, but the team declined to comment. Getz clarified that the reassessment of the player-evaluation process had been ongoing and was not solely influenced by recent personnel changes.
Immediate Goals
Getz outlined the immediate focus for the team during their playoff push, including minimizing runs from opponents in the early innings and maintaining leads. He emphasized the importance of effective base running, defense, and manufacturing runs through quality at-bats to support these efforts.
He expressed confidence in the bullpen’s current state and praised various strategic offensive options available.
Fearlessness and Team Culture
Getz attributed the team’s progress to their fearless approach, noting their ability to handle pressure and maintain belief in their capabilities.
“I don’t want to say they’re immune from feeling the pressure. It’s just that they’ve responded well with pressure and they think that they can beat anyone.”
He expressed the importance of supporting the players and helping them reclaim their confidence and freedom of play.
