Michael J. Fox was awarded the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2026 Emmys for his outstanding work advocating and supporting research for Parkinson’s disease. This honorary Emmy, given by the Television Academy and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, was established in 2002 to honor television figures making significant philanthropic contributions.
Fox attended the ceremony with his wife, Tracy Pollan. It marked their first appearance at the Emmy Awards in 13 years. The event was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14, 2026. As he took the stage, Fox was recognized with applause from the audience, reflecting on his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
“Initially, I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret. I worried it would affect my work and relationships with audiences,” Fox said from the podium.
Diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease at age 29, Fox first shared his condition with the public in 1998. He expressed gratitude for the support he received over the years, stating, “Would they laugh if they knew I was sick? And then I was stunned by the support I got. The support from all of you. It was so uplifting. It made me feel like I could keep doing this and I hadn’t lost what I do and they couldn’t take this away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me, and I really appreciate it.”
During his speech, Fox mentioned his foundation’s progress, indicating they are close to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease. His advocacy work has significantly raised awareness and funds for research, enhancing public understanding of the disease.
The announcement of Fox’s award was widely discussed online, with many individuals expressing admiration for his contributions. One social media user commented, “Michael J. Fox ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏We can all learn so much from him…🙏🏻👍,” while another added, “I really do think we underestimate how much Michael J. Fox really put Parkinson’s ‘on the map’ so to speak. I knew about it as a little kid because of him and his advocacy for it.” A third user wrote, “Michael J. Fox is an inspiration. The guy got dealt an awful hand.”
