James Talarico is showing promising performance in his Senate campaign against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Comparatively, Talarico is performing better in polls than Beto O’Rourke did during the 2018 race, where O’Rourke narrowly lost to Senator Ted Cruz. The Democrats have been aiming to secure a win in Texas for decades but have consistently fallen short. Currently, political ratings suggest the Senate race is extremely competitive.
If Talarico emerges victorious, it will mark the first time a Democrat has won a Texas Senate seat in nearly four decades. Senator Cruz has highlighted the implications, mentioning that Democrats could exert significant influence nationally if they claim Texas.
James Talarico’s Chances of Beating Ken Paxton
Recent polling from SoCal Strategies indicates Talarico leading Paxton, garnering 50% of the vote compared to Paxton’s 45%. This is a marked change from June when Paxton was the leader in the polls. The shift is partly attributed to Talarico’s strong gains among Hispanic voters, with their support increasing from a 10-point gap to a 38-point advantage over Paxton. Furthermore, independent voters are showing a preference for Talarico, widening the gap to 45 points from 10 points earlier.
Interestingly, 12% of Republican respondents plan to support Talarico. The survey notes that Republicans remain less decided compared to Democrats. While a segment of respondents who supported Trump in 2024 remains undecided, only a fraction who backed Kamala Harris is unsure about their Senate choice. Paxton’s challenge is clear; he needs to secure the undecided Republican votes and reclaim some of the 12% already inclined toward Talarico.
Market predictor platforms are also reflecting Talarico’s growing prospects. Polymarket now gives Talarico a 53% chance of victory, a rise from July when Paxton was slightly favored. Kalshi presents similar odds, marking a recent change in the election dynamics.
Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 Campaign Against Ted Cruz
In the 2018 campaign against Cruz, O’Rourke was trailing by about 3 points at this juncture according to the Real Clear Politics average. Cruz eventually secured the win with a 2-point margin over O’Rourke. Cruz had then acknowledged O’Rourke’s vigorous campaign efforts.
Currently, Cruz acknowledges the possibility of a Democratic victory. During a podcast, he articulated concerns about potential Republican losses in Texas. He discussed the election race with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, emphasizing the competition could result in a narrow 1- or 2-point gap. Cruz also shared his concerns with Sean Spicer, identifying Texas as part of highly competitive Senate races and warning it could spell a challenging election for Republicans.
