Impeachment Push by Texas Democrat Al Green
Democratic Representative Al Green from Texas is instigating a House vote, marking the ninth impeachment attempt against President Donald Trump since 2017. Green has led six of these efforts himself. Having lost his primary earlier this year, Green will not return to Congress next year. He introduced H.Res. 1486 on August 24, accusing Trump of abuse of power by allowing unaccountable operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The resolution references the deaths of four individuals in 2026: Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine.
On Monday, Green informed colleagues of his intention to bring the resolution to the floor under Rule IX, which requires the House to act within two legislative days. This sets the stage for a vote before Thursday’s adjournment. Green notified Trump in writing, stating, “I will call for a recorded vote on the floor of the House of Representatives on H.Res. 1486.” He accused federal immigration officers of unjustified killings, alleging Trump supports and conceals these actions.
Lack of Sponsored Support
As of Monday, congressional records show no other member has co-sponsored the resolution. House Democratic leaders have not endorsed it. Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the House Minority Leader, avoided commenting on potential impeachment actions, focusing instead on the cost of living. Asked on ABC’s This Week about possible impeachment if Democrats retake the House, Jeffries stated, “We haven’t ruled anything in, and we haven’t ruled anything out.”
Response from the White House
White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis criticized the resolution, arguing it contributes to rising assaults on law enforcement. She stated that ICE and CBP officers “risk their lives arresting dangerous individuals.” Reports from Newsweek show that Green’s and Jeffries’ offices were contacted for comment.
Overview of Previous Impeachment Attempts
The push for impeachment has seen various efforts:
- December 2017: Green filed his first resolution. The House voted to table it, with 58 Democrats voting against.
- January 2018: Green filed H.Res.705 after Trump’s remarks on immigrants. The House voted 355-66 to table it.
- July 2019: Green filed H.Res.498 over comments Trump made about four Democratic congresswomen. It was tabled 332-95.
- December 2019: The House Judiciary Committee’s first successful impeachment of Trump over Ukraine dealings. The Senate acquitted him in February 2020.
- January 2021: Post-Capitol attack, House impeached Trump on incitement of insurrection. The Senate voted short of the two-thirds needed for removal.
- 2025: Representative Shri Thanedar filed seven articles with Green as a cosponsor. His move to force a vote was withdrawn due to party pressures.
- June 2025: Green forced a vote on strikes on Iranian facilities. It’s tabled with a 344-79 vote.
- December 2025: Green filed H.Res.939, citing Trump’s reaction to a video by Democratic lawmakers. It was tabled 237-140.
Future Implications
If Democrats win both chambers, Trump faces potential new impeachment attempts. Despite surviving two Senate acquittals, the possibility arises if Democrats control the House. A simple majority is needed for House impeachment, while the Senate requires a two-thirds vote post-trial for removal. The Democratic goal of regaining control remains uncertain but feasible based on recent polling.
Former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross affirmed that Democrats would move to impeach Trump if they control Congress. Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin commented that impeachment alone cannot resolve Democratic concerns about Trump’s actions.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle emphasized Trump’s electoral strength, citing his 2024 victory with nearly 80 million votes, as a mandate for his agenda.
