Delaware voters are wrapping up the 2026 election cycle with the state’s primary elections. This season saw significant wins for progressives and socialists against Democratic establishment figures, while former President Donald Trump maintained strong influence in Republican races.
Democratic Challenges and Contests
In Delaware, Democratic Senator Chris Coons and State Attorney General Kathy Jennings face primary challengers as they prepare for the general election. Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Sarah McBride remains unopposed, with Republicans aiming to break the Democratic hold on statewide positions.
Progressive Victories
The primary season disrupted the Democratic Party as left-wing and Democratic Socialists of America candidates defeated prominent incumbents. Notably, DSA’s Melat Kiros upset 15-term Democratic Representative Diana DeGette in Colorado, and Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five-term Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York.
In major statewide Senate primaries, Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, and State Representative Angie Nixon in Florida secured wins. These victories highlight the growing influence of candidates advocating for policies like abolishing ICE, reducing military aid to Israel, and implementing a single-payer healthcare system.
Despite setbacks such as Francesca Hong’s loss in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, the left’s success indicates a significant shift in the Democratic Party’s future direction.
Republican Dynamics and Trump’s Influence
Trump remains a central figure in GOP nomination battles. His endorsements proved decisive in Senate Republican primaries, and he maintained a strong record in House races. However, some gubernatorial candidates he supported, such as Georgia’s Burt Jones and South Carolina’s Pamela Evette, lost.
GOP strategist Ryan Williams noted that Trump’s endorsement boosts candidates but doesn’t guarantee victory if other issues arise. Trump’s influence persists, particularly within the populist MAGA and America First factions.
Upcoming Delaware Races
Senator Chris Coons seeks a third term, facing challenges from University of Delaware professor Jeff Appelhans, naval architect Mary Louve, and former business executive Eric Hansen. Republicans Michael Katz and John Shulli compete for their party’s nomination.
Sarah McBride stands unopposed for a second term, while Republicans Joseph Arminio, Earl Cooper, and John Whalen vie for the nomination. Attorney General Kathy Jennings is challenged by Dwayne Bensing and Patty Rickman. David Graham is unchallenged for the GOP nomination.
The primaries conclude a dynamic election season, starting in March in Texas, North Carolina, and Arkansas, and closing in Delaware. The outcomes reflect broader political shifts within both major parties.
