Workers were seen inspecting an Amazon cargo plane at Miami International Airport after the aircraft overshot the runway on September 6, 2026. The tragic incident led to Amazon suspending its collaboration with 21 Air, the cargo carrier involved.
Amazon made the announcement on Sunday. A Boeing 767, loaded with Amazon packages, sped past the runway’s end by approximately 1,300 feet (396 meters). It then collided with a van containing workers from a plane cleaning company, resulting in five fatalities. Additionally, five individuals suffered injuries.
‘After the tragic incident last weekend, we’ve spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we’ve decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598,’ said Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel. ‘We’ll continue working to support the investigation and everyone affected.’
21 Air, a North Carolina-based company, had been transporting Amazon packages since 2024 but did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the suspension.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) plans to examine multiple factors. These include the plane’s ownership history, the weather conditions at the time, the aircraft’s maintenance records, and the operational practices of 21 Air.
Information from the NTSB released on September 9 revealed critical warnings during the flight. One pilot cautioned another about excessive speed upon approaching the runway. Cockpit audio captured automated alerts concerning the descent rate and proximity to the terrain. A complete transcript of the cockpit conversation is pending further investigation.
The Boeing 767 in question, originally designed for passenger transport, spent over 20 years with various international airlines. It was redesigned as a cargo plane in 2015, according to Flightradar24.
