Boston Red Sox rookie left-hander Payton Tolle impressed the Fenway Park crowd on Sunday during a rain-delayed game against the Kansas City Royals. The 23-year-old pitcher delivered an immaculate inning, retiring the top of the Royals’ lineup on nine pitches. The feat consisted of eight four-seam fastballs and one sinker, showcasing his aggressive approach to the strike zone.
Tolle’s performance marked the 125th immaculate inning in Major League Baseball history and the eighth for the Red Sox since 1901. The last time a Red Sox pitcher achieved this in the first inning was by Pedro Martinez in May 2002 against the Seattle Mariners.
Before his final pitch that completed the immaculate inning, Tolle confidently faced the home plate, aware of the accomplishment that was within reach. He wrapped up the inning by striking out Jac Caglianone.
Over six shutout innings, Tolle allowed just four hits and one walk, striking out seven batters on 96 pitches, leading to a 4-1 win for Boston. This added to his rookie season total of 166 strikeouts, trailing only Daisuke Matsuzaka’s Red Sox rookie record of 201 strikeouts in 2007.
Recently, Tolle expressed his disapproval of modern baseball’s trend of strict pitch count limitations on starting pitchers. He shared his views with reporters, emphasizing a preference for pitchers to endure longer outings, aiming for complete games. Tolle’s mentality and performance could be important as the Red Sox chase an American League wild card spot.
