The Mission of the Hollywood Prayer Network
Hollywood often faces criticism from Christians. Karen Covell has taken a different approach, spending 25 years urging prayers for those working there. She founded the Hollywood Prayer Network, viewing Hollywood as a vital ministry field.
Stories hold immense power in shaping emotions and identities. Covell recognized this when she began her faith-based organization. Now, with over 170 chapters in 42 countries, the network marked its 25th anniversary with a gala in Los Angeles.
Established in 2001, the Hollywood Prayer Network supports entertainers through prayer, community, and resources. Aspiring actors, writers, and producers find guidance here. The network offers prayer sessions, discipleship programs, and Bible studies.
We have a beautiful community here. You couldn’t get me out of this place for anything because the people that are here are wonderful.
Covell and her husband, Jim, saw a need for support for believers in Hollywood. It’s a competitive industry where many are freelancers. They created a space where people of faith, feeling torn between the church and entertainment industry, could find camaraderie.
Hollywood often clashed with the church, but Covell believed in prayer over boycotts. The network prays for individuals, from rising stars to public figures like Britney Spears and Robert Downey Jr. Support extends to wildlife, crisis relief, and individuals like Perez Hilton.
The network also supports child and teen actors through the “Kids Prayer Calendar.” Various groups for directors, dancers, writers, comedians, and tech professionals provide networking and mentorship. Its app connects members to local chapters worldwide.
Covell highlights community as essential for combating isolation, fear, and discouragement. Her 42-year marriage, marked by daily prayer, is a source of inspiration for her. Their book, “Confessions of a Hollywood Marriage,” shares their marriage journey.
The Hollywood Prayer Network has grown steadily, focusing on storytelling and community. Recent viral posts humorously suggested a Netflix documentary, though it was based on a video trend. Covell’s mission is to inspire storytellers and reassure them they aren’t alone.
