Chicago Bears Eyeing Move to Hammond, Indiana for New Stadium
Chicago Bears’ Potential Move to Indiana
When the Chicago Bears face off against the Minnesota Vikings in their 2026 home opener, it could be their final season at Soldier Field. Discussions about relocating to Hammond, Indiana, have become serious. This comes after the Bears’ announcement in June, indicating plans to develop a stadium across the state line.
Hammond’s Preparations
The possibility of moving has roots in Hammond’s strategic efforts. According to Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., the city had been cleaning up potential sites such as the Lost Marsh and Lake Terminal areas. Through cooperation with the state, about 300 acres were assembled, although initially without considering the Bears.
Favorable Conditions in Indiana
Indiana offers attractive property tax caps, a point of interest for the Bears. McDermott highlighted the legal caps in Indiana, providing financial certainty lacking in Illinois. This tax environment is part of what has enabled billions of dollars in investments in Northwest Indiana.
Bipartisan Support and Infrastructure
The move has seen significant bipartisan cooperation, with efforts led by Governor Mike Braun and other political leaders. The region also boasts robust infrastructure, including utilities and transportation, vital for accommodating a professional sports team like the Bears.
History of Discussions and Skepticism
Similar discussions occurred in the late 1990s about moving the Bears to Gary, Indiana. McDermott was initially skeptical, knowing past attempts had failed. Nonetheless, recent actions and calls indicate a more real possibility this time.
“We have all of the infrastructure to be able to bring a project like this to fruition,” said Heather Ennis, president of the Northwest Indiana Forum.
Challenges Ahead
The Bears’ lease at Soldier Field extends through 2033, with an option to end early. Despite easier access to Soldier Field from downtown Chicago, Hammond presents more financial feasibility. More infrastructure improvements are needed, but Indiana’s location offers advantages over competitors like Arlington Heights.
Ongoing Negotiations
Negotiations continue, with McDermott confirming they are “in the red zone.” The outcome depends on Bears ownership and President Kevin Warren. Indiana is eager to host the Bears, seeing it as an opportunity for significant economic growth and development in the region.
