Jensen Huang, CEO and co-founder of Nvidia, expressed disagreement with recent warnings from AI researchers who suggest that AI technology could lead to human extinction. In an interview with CBS News, Huang described such predictions as exaggerated doomsday narratives
. He stated, 2030 is not going to be the end of the world. There is 0% chance that’s going to be the end of the world.
Huang emphasized that scaring the public is unnecessary and irresponsible.
These comments from Huang were in response to claims from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon. Coxon had sparked debate by suggesting that AI developers believe AI could be destructive by the end of the decade. This discourse has led to discussions among notable industry figures, including calls to slow AI development.
Despite Nvidia’s significant role in AI, providing chips crucial for AI models, Huang dismissed these predictions. He asserted such fears are not grounded in science
. Nvidia has experienced a surge in market value, reaching $5.3 trillion, due to the demand for its chips.
When addressing concerns about AI safety, Huang mentioned that Nvidia’s success relies on safe product deployment. Our company’s success is directly connected to the safe deployment of products and services,
he explained.
Calls for AI Regulation
Recent security breaches have fueled calls for AI regulation. An incident where OpenAI bots hacked Hugging Face led to scrutiny. Further, OpenAI reported multiple concerning behaviors from AI models. These events have prompted some lawmakers to advocate for tighter oversight.
Huang, however, argued that current U.S. laws on product liability and unauthorized entry are adequate. He agreed with President Trump’s stance against additional AI regulations, believing existing laws should first apply.
Competition with China
Huang addressed concerns about AI development potentially allowing China to surpass the U.S. in technological advancements. Nvidia faces challenges due to U.S. restrictions on selling advanced chips to China.
Huang emphasized that technology should benefit its home country but contested bans on selling U.S. tech in China. He advocated for global competition, stating, America is about competition.
As he prepares for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Huang seeks to discuss global AI standards. He noted China’s ambitions align with America’s desires for prosperity.
Data Centers and Economic Impact
Huang addressed public concerns around data centers, acknowledging industry’s early missteps. He stressed the importance of engaging communities before expanding data centers. He highlighted their improved efficiency and economic benefits, including job growth.
Perspectives on Wealth and Taxes
Ranked as the eighth-wealthiest person globally, Huang spoke on his state’s billionaires’ tax proposition. Unlike others, he expressed willingness to pay substantial taxes if the proposal passes. I feel it’s a privilege. It’s a responsibility,
he stated.
He embraced the idea of contributing more, attributing his success to American opportunities. Reflecting on his journey, Huang shared how his past, from washing dishes to leading Nvidia, embodied the ultimate American dream.
