Bad Bunny faced a serious issue with an AI-generated track, “Demo 5: Nostalgia.” This song, featuring artificial clones of his and others’ voices, highlighted the growing AI threat in music. He responded by asking fans who liked the song to leave his WhatsApp channel.
The issue has deeper roots. An investigation revealed AI datasets containing 21.2 million tracks, including Bad Bunny’s, were used without permission. Major labels like Universal Music Group and Sony Music are taking action against such unauthorized use. This problem extends to streaming services like Deezer, where nearly half of daily uploads are AI-generated. This places synthetic tracks in direct competition with human-created music.
Latin music is particularly affected. It leads globally in streaming, and its U.S. revenue surpassed $1 billion in 2025. However, a study predicts creators could lose up to 25% of their income to generative AI by 2028. This echoes past undervaluation when Spanish-language music was seen as niche despite its success. AI now risks taking voices from artists entirely.
Legislation like the NO FAKES Act could help. It aims to give people control over AI replicas of their voices. Simultaneously, AI platforms are starting to pay artists under new licensed partnerships, showing a possible path forward.
For Latin music’s future, the choice between partnership and exploitation is crucial. Protection begins with solid contracts, comprehensive metadata, and collective industry efforts. The fight isn’t confined to one country since Latin music is global, and an AI model trained in one place can replicate voices everywhere.
As National Hispanic Heritage Month begins, it’s crucial to celebrate not just Latin music’s achievements, but also to ensure its creators are protected and compensated fairly. Heritage should safeguard their rights against AI imitation.
José Valentino Ruiz, a multi-Latin Grammy-winning professional, underscores the importance of fair compensation and control over AI technology in the music industry today.
