Deshaun Watson Shines After Weather Delays in Browns Victory
Deshaun Watson Leads Browns to Victory Amid Storms
Deshaun Watson earned the Week 1 starting position for the Cleveland Browns, a decision discussed by Danny Parkins and Coach Eric Mangini. The debate included insights into the Baltimore Ravens’ defense and Mike Vrabel’s concerns about the New England Patriots’ depth.
Former NFL QB Brian Hoyer weighed in on the Dallas Cowboys hype and raised questions about the Los Angeles Chargers following an offensive line injury.
The Browns remained in Florida after a disappointing Week 1 loss that risked Watson’s position as starting quarterback. However, they made a turnaround, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-19 despite a two-hour weather delay at Raymond James Stadium.
Storms and Victory
The forecast threatened lightning, high winds, and heavy rain, which caused delays after the Browns secured their first lead. A 17-yard touchdown by Blake Whiteheart ended a six-minute drive, putting them ahead.
Both teams stayed in the locker rooms during a two-hour lightning delay at the two-minute warning, with the Browns in possession at second-and-4 from Cleveland’s 28-yard line.
Mayfield’s Challenge
Baker Mayfield, seeking redemption against his former team, tried to respond with a touchdown drive. The Buccaneers were eager for a win following their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last week.
After play resumed, a lightning delay tested both teams. The Buccaneers missed opportunities as Mayfield faced pressure from the Browns’ defense.

A holding penalty pushed Mayfield back to Cleveland’s 23-yard line, and a long pass to the end zone fell beyond Emeka Egbuka’s reach.
Watson and the Browns celebrated a victory with head coach Todd Monken enjoying his first win.
Watson’s Performance
Watson completed 24 of 30 attempts, throwing for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie Denzel Boston had five catches for a game-high 95 yards.
Cleveland will host their next game against the Carolina Panthers, where Watson’s reception awaits. His improvement over a 34-10 preseason loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars strengthens his position as the starter.
The Buccaneers face another challenge next week as they host the Minnesota Vikings, who displayed defensive prowess against the Chicago Bears in adverse weather.
