Authorities in California are actively searching for Derek Spencer, a 44-year-old man considered armed and dangerous. Spencer is wanted on several felony charges, including allegedly pointing a firearm at individuals in Placer County on Sunday.
Search Efforts and Incidents
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office reported that Spencer was sought after an initial incident where he allegedly pointed a firearm at people. During an encounter on Sunday in the Iowa Hill area, Spencer reportedly rammed a patrol vehicle and managed to escape, initiating a wide-reaching manhunt.
Law enforcement officers faced additional challenges as Spencer fired at them and the helicopters aiding the search. Remarkably, no officers were injured in these exchanges.
Public Safety Measures
Residents of the Iowa Hill area have been advised to lock their doors and stay inside due to the ongoing manhunt. Authorities emphasized that the search has been particularly difficult because of the expansive area, dense forests, and rugged terrain.
Discovery of a Murder Victim
During the search, deputies discovered an adult female victim believed to have been murdered by Spencer. This grim discovery was made in a home that tactical teams were clearing, where the woman was found shot inside. Investigators suspect that Spencer killed the woman before fleeing into the surrounding woods.
Continued Efforts
The search for Spencer is being conducted with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies. The sheriff’s office has confirmed that search operations will proceed throughout the night, with efforts focused on capturing Spencer.
Suspect Description
For identification purposes, the sheriff’s office describes Spencer as bald with a goatee.
