Reporters from several news outlets faced restrictions from entering the White House after President Trump banned them. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico took legal action, accusing the administration of infringing their First Amendment rights. This move followed Trump’s critique of their coverage as unfair.
CNN’s reporter, Julia Benbrook, reported live from near the White House shortly before the lawsuit filing. The lawsuit claims the Trump administration’s actions violated constitutional rights, including free speech and due process. Legal representatives argue that these actions directly challenge the First Amendment, preventing the outlets from performing critical newsgathering tasks.
Without access to the White House, reporters argue they are unable to cover significant events impacting the nation. Lead attorney Theodore J. Boutrous cited strong legal precedents favorable to their case. In a similar case, Boutrous successfully argued against a White House order restricting funding to public media outlets.
The White House has yet to reply to NPR’s request for comments. Trump’s history includes losing other legal battles relating to press restrictions, including revoking CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s credentials. Another ongoing legal case involves the Associated Press, which faced reprimands for not using Trump’s preferred term for the Gulf of Mexico.
Trump expressed on social media his disdain for what he described as fiction and lies in media coverage and signaled potential future bans on other outlets. Despite the ban, Trump indicated that ongoing negative coverage prompted his actions, not a specific report.
Journalists from the affected organizations reported over the weekend that their entry to the White House had been blocked despite holding permanent press passes. The lawsuit emphasizes how this ban has severely restricted the outlets’ ability to report on key government activities.
