Shough’s Triumph and Controversy
New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough demonstrated marked improvement as he led the team to a 24-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Shough scored a pivotal touchdown from the 1-yard line, sealing the victory as New Orleans’ defense held firm against Baltimore’s offense in the final moments.
Shough’s touchdown, however, was not without controversy. Officials declared Shough had crossed the goal line, but viewers questioned the call after replays showed Shough losing the ball as he was tackled. Observations also indicated a Ravens defender might have grabbed his facemask.
“We exhausted all available angles and could not prove clear and obvious that he did not break the plane of the goal line,” stated Mark Butterworth, NFL vice president of instant replay.
Late Game Drama
Despite the controversy, the Ravens had another opportunity with 1:28 on the clock but failed to capitalize. Lamar Jackson couldn’t orchestrate a successful drive, leaving Baltimore short of a comeback.
Overall, Shough posted impressive statistics, completing 27 of 34 passes with one touchdown throw and one rushing score, totaling 252 passing yards.
“It’s a hard play on the goal line because … sometimes they lose sight of the football. I think it’s a challenging play for everyone,” said Saints head coach Kellen Moore. “Fortunate for us to get that. Obviously we’re going to go for it in that situation. Chance to score a touchdown. If not, we’re forcing them to be on the minus-1 and go the long way.”
Bouncing Back
This win was a crucial bounce-back for New Orleans following their narrow loss to the Detroit Lions a week prior. Shough had excelled with 410 yards and three touchdown passes in that game as well.
Both teams now hold a 1-1 record after the match.
