The Los Angeles Chargers faced high expectations when the NFL schedule was released. Fans anticipated a strong start against the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders. However, both games ended in losses.
In the first two matchups, the Chargers allowed 26 points and scored only 14. The defense has struggled, giving up an average of 349 yards per game and managing just one takeaway. Pro Bowl safety Derwin James acknowledged these issues following the team’s loss to the Raiders.
“We got to look each other in the eye and just tell the truth and just get better,” James said. “Because, right now, that looks trash. I’m angry, but being angry doesn’t fix anything. We have to get it fixed. I feel like we’re a couple of plays away. But we have to win these games.”
James has been a standout with 17 tackles and one pass breakup in the first two games. However, the rest of the team needs to step up for better results in the coming weeks.
Teams starting the season 0-2 often struggle. According to OPTA Stats, the Chargers are only the second team in NFL history to lose consecutive home games by double digits against teams with a sub-.200 win percentage from the previous season. The only other team to do that was the 1926 Racine Tornadoes.
Looking ahead, the Chargers face tougher opponents on the road. They play the Buffalo Bills in Week 3, followed by the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4. The road ahead is challenging, but improvement is crucial for a successful season.
