Rhiannon Giddens, a renowned musician, shares her profound connection to her musical heritage. She often experiences a deep sense of connection to her ancestors while playing the banjo. Giddens describes herself as ‘a folkie to the bone’ and believes this connection has sustained her in the music industry. She plays music rooted in the Black string band tradition, originating from slave times. Her talents have also been featured in contemporary music, such as playing banjo on BeyoncĂ©’s hit ‘Texas Hold ‘Em.’
Giddens serves as the artistic director of the Silk Road Ensemble, an initiative founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The ensemble collaborates with musicians globally, integrating diverse musical traditions. Giddens’ latest album, Hope Is the Thing with Feathers, is inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem. The theme of hope is deeply personal for Giddens, stemming from her ancestors’ experiences of extreme poverty in the American South. She reflects on the importance of maintaining hope despite challenging times, emphasizing a belief in individual resilience.
