Sylvester Stallone recently shared his surprise at being named a special ambassador to Hollywood by President Donald Trump. The announcement, made by Trump on his platform Truth Social, positioned Stallone alongside Mel Gibson and Jon Voight as ‘Special Envoys.’ Their role was to provide guidance on reviving film and television production in the U.S.
Speaking with The Sunday Times, Stallone, 80, recalled the moment he learned of his appointment while watching TV. He described his reaction, stating, ‘I was watching TV one night and they say, ‘So Stallone, Mel Gibson, and Jon Voight will be…’ And I went, ‘What? Excuse me? Really?’ He added that if consulted earlier, he would have expressed doubts about the feasibility of such an appointment.
Stallone remarked on Hollywood’s complex nature, likening it to ‘feudal states’ with ‘little kingdoms.’ He voiced skepticism about influencing major studios’ operations and noted that he, along with Gibson and Voight, prefer independence.
The actor shared that he conveyed his challenges to Trump, thanking him while declining the role. He emphasized Hollywood’s corporate environment, stating, ‘Corporate people won’t want to hear me tell them about finance.’
When Trump initially announced the appointments on January 16, 2025, he praised Stallone, Gibson, and Voight as talented individuals to reinvigorate Hollywood. The former president expressed a vision of a ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’ returning.
Gibson too expressed surprise, stating he learned of the appointment simultaneously with the public. Despite his initial reaction, he acknowledged the duty to assist as a citizen. Gibson lightheartedly inquired about benefits the position might entail.
While Stallone appeared hesitant to embrace the role fully, he maintained a cordial relationship with Trump. Following the November 2024 election, Stallone praised Trump at the America First Policy Institute Gala, likening him to a ‘mythical character’ and labeling him the ‘second George Washington.’
Stallone was later recognized as a Kennedy Center honoree in 2025 by Trump, joining luminaries such as George Strait, KISS, and Gloria Gaynor. Despite backing Republican candidates, Stallone’s political contributions have crossed party lines, including support for former President Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, Voight actively embraced his ambassador role, meeting with the White House to promote a federal film tax incentive. Advocating for U.S. production, his efforts received endorsements from Senator Adam Schiff and Representative Laura Friedman, reflecting bipartisan support.
President Trump has publicly criticized Hollywood’s current state, labeling it a ‘Total Disaster’ and advocating for legislative actions to revive the industry. Voight, supported by his management team, continues his efforts with backing from Trump and bipartisan political figures.
