President Donald Trump will address the world stage at the United Nations General Assembly. He faces multiple geopolitical challenges that might define his second-term foreign policy. These include conflicts with Iran and the ongoing war in Ukraine, as well as competition with China.
Trump plans to highlight efforts by his administration to resolve entrenched global conflicts while handling adversaries with strong economic and security ties. Officials mentioned that he aims to argue that previous administrations ignored these global issues.
The President’s address will cover Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the administration’s Gaza peace plan, and issues concerning the Western Hemisphere. Meanwhile, Iran is expected to dominate diplomatic talks during the event. An American official has stated that Iran will be central to discussions as the administration continues its efforts to economically isolate Tehran.
Trump is scheduled to meet with leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council after his address. The topics will include the conflict and security situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, Trump will push for reforms in the United Nations. During last year’s address, he questioned the U.N.’s effectiveness and suggested it has unrealized potential. His administration claims to have cut over $1 billion from the U.N. budget and reduced more than 3,000 headquarters positions.
A senior official described this approach as refocusing the U.N. on peace and security by doing ‘less things better.’ Trump’s address offers the chance for diplomacy with Iran, as their president and foreign minister plan to be in New York for the event.
Following the General Assembly, Trump will switch his focus to China. Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Washington for discussions with Trump shortly after the U.N. appearance.
