Republican Senator John Curtis has called for an investigation into Donald Trump Jr concerning his foreign business dealings and receipt of gifts. This includes funding from Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev for a “lavish wedding afterparty.”
In a letter sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, Senator Curtis highlighted that Kremlev funded Trump Jr’s wedding afterparty, located on a private island, shortly after Kremlev’s visit to China accompanying Vladimir Putin. Curtis expressed concerns about Trump Jr’s active promotion of cryptocurrency ventures backed by his family, his pursuit of international real estate deals involving meetings with foreign heads of state, and his reported investments in defense contracting.
These reports raise legitimate questions about foreign access to members of a president’s family and the potential expectations of favorable treatment.
Curtis pointed out that such relationships might lead to expectations of returned favors, which could be contrary to the interests of American citizens and allies, potentially posing national security threats.
He urged the committee to investigate the use of private family ties for financial gain, preferential treatment, or domestic and foreign interests’ access. Curtis also recommended subpoenas for Trump Jr and Hunter Biden, son of former president Joe Biden, to testify about their business activities.
Newsweek has sought comments from The Trump Organization via email, outside regular working hours. This story is developing and will be updated with further information.
