The NFL season is underway, and already some teams face significant challenges after just two games. With only 17 games in the regular season, an 0-2 start is problematic. Since the league expanded to a 17-game schedule in 2021, 40 teams have started the season with two losses. Only eight of those teams managed to reach the playoffs, highlighting the uphill battle faced by current winless teams.
Statistics show that 20% of teams starting 0-2 have made it to the postseason. This leaves the majority, 80%, on the outside looking in. With this underwhelming success rate, fanbases, analysts, and teams themselves face considerable pressure.
The eight winless teams of the current season confront varied challenges:
Los Angeles Chargers: This team is in full panic mode. Despite head coach John Harbaugh’s impressive career, he lacks experience dealing with such crises. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s management has not benefitted quarterback Justin Herbert, complicating matters with a challenging schedule ahead.
Houston Texans: Not in panic yet, but concerns arise. Under coach DeMeco Ryans, the team is historically slow to start. Previous seasons saw 0-2 beginnings but resulted in playoff appearances. The current state shows a struggling offensive line and troubling defensive performance.
Indianapolis Colts: Panic looms. The team faces potential leadership changes with head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard if the losing streak continues. Despite a blockbuster trade last season for cornerback Sauce Gardner, wins have not followed.
Miami Dolphins: No panic. Their strategy is clear, focusing on long-term goals over immediate wins. Coach Jeff Hafley’s comments reflect an acceptance of the current situation, underscoring their direction towards future talent acquisition.
Tennessee Titans: Panic is near. The franchise has a history of quick changes with quarterbacks and coaches. Stability is lacking, creating an urgent need for improvement to avoid rash decisions from ownership.
Washington Commanders: Panic is imminent due to quarterback Jayden Daniels’ injury. His potential need for surgery and season-ending consequences are significant concerns for their playoff hopes.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Quarterback Baker Mayfield faces personal pressure despite coach Todd Bowles’ calm demeanor. The stakes are high for Mayfield, who is contemplating his performance issues after securing a large contract.
Atlanta Falcons: Optimism prevails as quarterback Michael Penix Jr. returns to the lineup. His initial performance will be crucial for changing the team’s current trajectory.
As these teams navigate early-season adversity, decisions made in the coming weeks will be pivotal.
