Investigators conducted thorough searches for a missing handgun allegedly used by former ‘American Idol’ contestant Caleb Flynn in the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn. A Tipp City detective testified about the exhaustive efforts made during Flynn’s murder trial in Ohio.
Flynn is accused of fatally shooting Ashley Flynn inside their home on February 16 and attempting to stage the crime scene as a break-in. He has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and other charges.
Detailed Search Efforts
Detective Adam Bernard provided insights into the measures taken to locate the missing firearm in the days following Ashley’s death. These included searching the backyard, wooded areas, and storm drains. A high-powered magnet was utilized to scan storm drains on multiple streets.
Investigators removed drain covers, lowered the magnet inside, and examined connecting pipes. Bernard physically entered accessible areas to ensure nothing was overlooked. Despite these efforts, the weapon was not found.
Vehicles from the Flynn residence were inspected after being lifted, but no gun was discovered. Investigators even rented equipment to remove attic insulation. Further attempts to trace Flynn’s firearm purchase records through calls to over 20 gun stores in South Carolina yielded no results.
Forensic Testimony
During the trial, a forensic pathologist detailed two gunshot wounds to Ashley’s head. Dr. Bryan Casto explained that the wounds overlapped, suggesting close-range shooting. One bullet exited her head and reentered her arm, where it was recovered during the autopsy.
BCI crime scene investigators presented evidence hinting that the break-in scene was staged. Technician noted unexpected damage patterns on a garage door, unlike typical forced entries.
Defense and Evidence
The defense questioned the conclusions drawn by investigators, citing the lack of blood-spatter analysis and uncertainty about when some damages occurred. BCI Senior Special Agent David Hammond testified about the absence of blood spatter on Flynn’s clothing.
Tips received by police, including one about an alleged ‘hit,’ were printed and forwarded to the FBI. Bernard was unaware of any FBI investigation into specific tips.
Prosecutors presented extensive communication records between Flynn and his mistress as part of the evidence. Over 100,000 lines of data linked to Flynn’s email were obtained through a search warrant and included in the trial.
