The Greenville County Coroner’s Office reported that Hayden Panettiere died from the toxic effects of a combination of substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The death has been ruled accidental.
On August 16, 2026, at around 1:51 PM, a 911 call was made to report a cardiac arrest at 701 Easley Bridge Road in Greenville. Emergency Medical Services arrived and attempted advanced cardiac life support but were unable to resuscitate her. Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 PM.
The coroner’s office and Greenville City Police Department conducted a joint investigation. Panettiere, 36, was from California and was found unresponsive in a residence where she was staying temporarily. An autopsy revealed no signs of trauma that might have contributed to her death.
Reaction and Investigation
Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s boyfriend, and his brother Zach were the ones who discovered her condition and called 911. Brian provided authorities with a bag containing the medication Panettiere had been taking. According to the police report, Zach was visibly emotional during the resuscitation efforts, while Brian reacted emotionally once she was declared dead.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has become involved in the investigation. Meanwhile, Panettiere’s representatives have criticized those using her death to spread rumors and urged people to provide useful information to law enforcement instead of speculating on social media.
Her team stated that not all details have been publicly disclosed and emphasized that those close to her are cooperating with authorities to reveal the truth and ensure justice.
