A bipartisan group of senators has urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to prioritize the release of an American journalist held in Iran. Concerns over the journalist’s deteriorating health and possible risks to his life underscore the urgency of the appeal.
Senators’ Call to Action
Sens. Brian Schatz, Marsha Blackburn, Jacky Rosen, and Dave McCormick called on the Trump administration to employ all diplomatic channels to secure the release of Reza Valizadeh. Valizadeh, a dual citizen and former journalist for Radio Farda, has been imprisoned since September 2024.
“With every day of continued detention, Mr. Valizadeh’s life is in danger,” the senators stated. “We are extremely concerned that Iranian authorities could take sudden, arbitrary actions to endanger his life.”
Background and Current Situation
At 49, Valizadeh faces a 10-year sentence for charges associated with his journalism work and alleged collaboration with the United States. His health has notably declined in Tehran’s Evin Prison, where he has been denied necessary medical care.
Recent changes include the release of Kamran Hekmati, another American wrongfully detained, after serving half of a two-year sentence. However, Hekmati remains barred from leaving Iran. Dena Karari, another dual citizen, was released following a heart attack, demonstrating the tense situation for detained Americans.
Diplomatic Efforts and Statements
As reported, the Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasizes prioritizing the cases of wrongfully detained Americans during diplomatic engagements. Yet, he expressed that detailing individual cases could impede efforts.
Ryan Fayhee, Valizadeh’s attorney, noted the significance of diplomatic meetings such as the U.N. General Assembly. “Iran has an opportunity to demonstrate goodwill through action,” Fayhee remarked. The senators highlighted that using American citizens as political tools has been a troubling pattern for Tehran.
The letter from the senators stressed making Valizadeh’s freedom a priority. They implored that decisive action be taken through diplomatic channels to ensure his safe release.
