The Los Angeles Rams achieved their first victory of the season on Monday night, allowing coach Sean McVay to put behind him the disappointment of the season-opening loss in Australia. McVay had been dwelling on their defeat to the San Francisco 49ers for nearly two weeks before facing the New York Giants.
McVay openly acknowledged after the game that he had taken the loss personally. He admitted responsibility, understanding his role contributed to the challenging experience.
In a candid interview, McVay shared his reflections: “Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. Sometimes mistakes are made, like poor travel decisions that put the team at a disadvantage.” With this understanding, McVay moved past the missteps of the Australian trip.
“We’re not playing in Australia ever again, I hope,” McVay expressed, reflecting on the aftermath of the loss, before clarifying the great atmosphere was not to blame.
The Rams’ travel arrangements for the game in Australia raised questions. The team flew overnight, landing in Melbourne just the day before their match. In contrast, the 49ers arrived six days earlier, adapting to the new environment. The Rams’ scheduling led to a swift defeat, but McVay has learned from the situation.
After returning and securing a victory against the Giants, McVay can now look forward to a more promising path. The players, including quarterback Matthew Stafford, are delighted to be back at home. Stafford noted, “Our guys came out and played great, full of passion and energy back at SoFi.”
