Beach Chair Dispute Turns Fatal in Greece
A conflict over beach chairs resulted in a tragic death on a beach in Vouliagmeni, Greece. The incident occurred on the morning of September 20 when an argument broke out between an 82-year-old man and a 76-year-old man regarding a lounge chair reservation, according to reports from the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
The dispute started when the older man attempted to save a spot for his group, leading to a heated argument, as reported by witnesses to the BBC. The loud altercation was noticed by other beachgoers.
During the confrontation, the 82-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the sand. He was rushed to a local hospital but died soon after, Kathimerini reported.
The Vouliagmeni police department was contacted by Fox News Digital for further information. The younger man, aged 76, was arrested and charged with inflicting fatal bodily harm.
A 21-year-old woman accompanying the 76-year-old was also arrested. She faced charges of verbal abuse and aiding in causing fatal bodily harm but was later released. According to the BBC, the woman had a swollen and bloody face from the confrontation.
The argument was about a cluster of six sunbeds. The 76-year-old man and his companion had bought tickets for two loungers, but the older man insisted the space was reserved for his friends, local reports indicated.
The situation escalated physically when the older man allegedly hit the young woman. This prompted the 76-year-old man and others to respond, witnesses recounted to the BBC. “We saw them beating a man… all this over a deck chair,” recounted an observer to TA NEA.
Efforts to save the 82-year-old’s life included CPR and the use of a defibrillator by a nurse present on the beach, but he was declared dead shortly after at a nearby hospital. A postmortem examination was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
Vouliagmeni Beach can see up to 7,000 to 8,000 visitors daily, creating congestion and possible friction among locals. The tragic event left onlookers in shock. “It was chaos,” a witness told TA NEA.
The 76-year-old suspect and the young woman are scheduled to appear before a judge on September 23, as reported by Kathimerini. This dispute occurred amid increasing tensions in Greece regarding beach access. Earlier this year, authorities began cracking down on illegal sunbed monopolies using drones and a complaint app, according to the BBC.
