NFL quarterbacks often endure significant physical challenges during games, as evidenced by injuries to several of the league’s notable players only weeks into the season. However, Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals may have experienced an unexpected health benefit from a hit during a recent game.
Following Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Texans, Burrow informed Houston’s pass rusher, Will Anderson Jr., that the Texans’ defense had “popped my rib back into place.” While Anderson initially took Burrow’s comment as a jest, Burrow seemed to be quite serious.
On Tuesday, the NFL released footage showing Burrow, who was mic’d up during the game, repeating the same story to his teammates. He mentioned to star receiver Ja’Marr Chase, “One of those hits popped my rib back in place.” Burrow’s teammates were surprised, leading them to ask for clarification, but Burrow confirmed his claim.
Players even speculated about the hit responsible for this unusual outcome, believing it may have occurred when Danielle Hunter tackled Burrow. Receiver Tee Higgins recalled, “He stood up and he said ‘Aaaarrgghhh.'” Burrow further explained that after the tackle, “it felt better.”
Burrow concurred with a teammate who suggested Hunter’s hit “adjusted your whole back.” Burrow’s back condition had kept him on the injury report before Week 2, although he was able to participate in the game despite being listed as questionable.
Bengals coach Zac Taylor stated on Monday that Burrow emerged from the game in “good” condition, although he is not yet prepared for a full week of practice. As Bengals fans anticipate the upcoming match against the Pittsburgh Steelers, they might find reassurance knowing that Burrow’s health does not seem to have been further compromised.
