Steve Lotysz, known in the golfing world as Steve Lotus, once found himself gazing at Medinah Country Club from outside its gates. He imagined a day when he would contribute his artistic talents to the lush greens inside. Now, years later, Lotysz has fulfilled that dream.
Lotysz, a former dentist and accomplished artist, has been commissioned to create the artwork for the Presidents Cup at Medinah’s Course No. 3. Starting Thursday, he will engage with patrons and offer prints of his work. This marks the fourth time Lotysz, aged 73, has been entrusted with artwork for a major event at Medinah.
The United States team, led by Brandt Snedeker, will compete against the International team headed by Geoff Ogilvy. Top golfers including Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, and Justin Thomas represent the USA, while international stars like Si Wood Kim and Adam Scott will challenge them.
Since its inception in 1994, the Presidents Cup has occurred every other year, with the United States dominating the record at 13-1-1, securing ten consecutive victories. Lotysz previously painted for the 1999 and 2006 PGA Championships—both won by Tiger Woods—and the 2012 Ryder Cup, famous for Team Europe’s comeback victory.
Among the highlights of 2026 for Lotysz was his involvement in the PGA Championship in Philadelphia and the Open Championship in Southport, England. He also celebrated his 50th anniversary with his wife, Sue, who has been instrumental in handling the administrative tasks behind his 56 commissions since 1997.
Lotysz expresses gratitude for his numerous commissions, professing humility despite what he considers a prolific career. He recalls presenting his golf scenes to Olympia Fields Country Club, marking the beginning of many successful collaborations.
His dual passions for both art and golf provide Lotysz with a distinctive edge. He notes that while some artists focus solely on art, his familiarity with golf adds depth to his work. He attributes some of his artistic insights to spiritual guidance, incorporating the Christian fish symbol in his signature.
Looking ahead, Lotysz holds commissions for 2027, including painting the PGA Championships in Frisco, Texas, and the Open Championship at the historic St. Andrews in Scotland—a course he has painted twice before.
He remains committed to his craft. Lotysz plans to continue painting for as long as his work is valued and cherished, feeling blessed by the connections and appreciation he receives from others.
