Republican Leaders Sue Over Voter Roll Records
The Republican National Committee (RNC) and state GOP leaders have initiated legal proceedings against New Jersey’s election officials. The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, targets New Jersey’s top election authority and officials from five counties: Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union. The RNC accuses these officials of failing to provide voter roll maintenance records required under federal law.
RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated, “The RNC exposed noncitizens on New Jersey’s voter rolls. Now, election officials are hiding the records that would tell voters how it happened. The RNC won’t stand for it.”
Details of the Allegations
While some documents have been produced, the RNC’s lawsuit claims key records are still being withheld. This follows reports by Fox News Digital, which highlighted that hundreds of noncitizens were found on New Jersey’s voter registries as of early June.
Investigations revealed some of these individuals had self-attested to being noncitizens while continuing to vote in past elections. Other cases emerged from jury duty evasion investigations where individuals claimed they lacked U.S. citizenship yet were registered voters.
The RNC previously sued the New Jersey Secretary of State in July over nonresidents participating in state elections.
Government and Legal Responses
Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill acknowledged errors in voter registrations. Republicans accuse state Democrats of evading accountability and failing to explain the process behind these registrations. Seeking clarity, the RNC issued legal notices demanding records and explanations.
The lawsuit aims to enforce transparency and safeguard electoral integrity. Congressional investigators in Washington are also interested in these withheld records due to similar registration failures.
Impact on Election Integrity Efforts
This legal move is part of the RNC’s nationwide campaign for election integrity before midterm elections. Similar demands for voter roll data have been sent to 48 states to ensure voter registries are adequately maintained.
The committee’s efforts in New Jersey include previous legal actions challenging election procedures, like suing the New Jersey Secretary of State over alleged unlawful voting practices.
Involvement of New Jersey Officials
Joining the lawsuit are Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., and New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco. Kean Jr. emphasized the necessity of transparency in the wake of Gov. Sherrill admitting over 6,600 noncitizens were on voter rolls. He stressed the importance of releasing all relevant records to ensure voters have the full truth.
