A tragic helicopter crash resulted in the deaths of two pilots who were involved in firefighting efforts in Yosemite National Park. This incident, reported by The Associated Press (AP), occurred during operations to combat the Dome Fire, with the aircraft handling water bucket drops.
The two pilots, Ryan Cutter and Greg King, were the only occupants of the helicopter, which belonged to Precision Helicopters. This company was contracted to assist with firefighting operations.
Ryan Cutter started his career as a helicopter pilot in 2011, joining Precision Helicopters a year and a half ago. His contribution was warmly remembered by colleagues and his LinkedIn profile described him as a cherished husband and friend. A GoFundMe tribute emphasized these personal connections.
Greg King, according to the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, had extensive experience fighting wildfires in Alaska. He held close ties with their firefighting community, having collaborated with the division. This agency recalled him as a committed aviator and cherished friend.
The Dome Fire in Yosemite, noted as burning actively since September 15, has drawn significant attention. The fire spans approximately 4.7 square miles, and firefighting teams have managed to contain about 15% of it.
The Super Puma helicopter involved in the crash was conducting important water bucket operations close to Ostrander Lake. This location is a notable distance from landmarks such as El Capitan, according to coordinates provided by AP.
Following the crash, there was a solemn procession carrying the bodies of the deceased pilots through Merced. This was documented by Fox 26 in California, and social media users expressed condolences for the families affected.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will spearhead the investigation into the crash. Meanwhile, efforts to contain the wildfire continue, involving approximately 580 personnel.
Tributes flowed online for Cutter and King. Precision Helicopters honored both men, acknowledging their dedication and service. The loss of these pilots continues to be felt deeply in the firefighting community.
