President Donald Trump held a briefing in New York City before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the United Nations General Assembly. He expressed hope that the White House ballroom construction would finish before his next meeting with China’s president.
Trump and Zelensky, who have had a mixed relationship, discussed potential solutions to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Both leaders aimed to find a resolution before winter. Trump addressed various topics, including an upcoming visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“He likes China, I like the U.S., that’s the way it is, but it’s a big deal tomorrow night, everybody wants to be there,” Trump said regarding the state visit. “I wish we had the ballroom. If we had the ballroom, we could have 2,000 people.”
Trump’s Relationship with Zelensky
Ahead of their private meeting, Trump emphasized a positive relationship with Zelensky as they sought a solution to the conflict with Russia. “The relationship is very strong,” Trump stated. Zelensky thanked Trump for his support, along with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were present.
Zelensky indicated optimism for a resolution before winter, with Trump noting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s involvement. “I think something is going to happen,” Trump remarked. During the brief media appearance, Zelensky had little to say, attributed to the timing before their discussion.
During Zelensky’s previous White House visit, tensions arose after Vice President JD Vance remarked that Zelensky should express gratitude to Trump for efforts to end the war. Zelensky’s attire, typically not a suit, drew criticism.
Impact of Russia-Ukraine War on Europe
Trump addressed concerns about potential conflict involving Russia and European nations, including the U.K. “I think it will be OK,” Trump said, urging caution from the U.K. He also discussed diesel export bans in light of rising costs due to strikes and the war in Iran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent evaluating the proposal.
White House Ballroom Progress
The White House ballroom’s construction continues after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared legal hurdles. Trump asserted that the project remained under budget and ahead of schedule, despite reports of escalating costs.
The ballroom replaces the demolished East Wing, a project criticized for bypassing proper approval processes. Trump argued the necessity for a ballroom for state events, as outdoor temporary constructions often sufficed previously.
Upcoming Visit from Xi Jinping
Trump is set to host Xi Jinping in Washington, D.C., with both leaders aiming to enhance U.S.-China relations amidst ongoing trade tensions. Xi is expected to arrive Thursday for his first state visit in over a decade. Although the new ballroom won’t be ready, a state dinner will occur in the East Room, according to the White House.
