Republican Byron Donalds, running for governor in Florida, has altered his campaign strategy by removing references to President Donald Trump from his website. This shift occurs as polls show a closer race against Democrat David Jolly.
Campaign Changes
Donalds revised his website, reducing mentions of Trump’s endorsement. The homepage now leads with the slogan “Fighting to defend the Florida dream,” featuring a video of Donalds with his family. It emphasizes his position as a conservative fighter, discussing issues like affordability, healthcare, and education.
A previous version of the site, captured on September 3, prominently featured Trump’s endorsement. It included a banner urging supporters to “Chip in to Support Trump Endorsed Byron Donalds,” with “Trump Endorsed” highlighted in red. The page displayed photos of Donalds with his wife, Erika, and Trump, along with a quote from Trump’s endorsement.
The updated site still notes Trump’s endorsement but alongside support from figures like Elon Musk and House Speaker Mike Johnson. It also briefly mentions Donalds’ role as a Trump surrogate in the 2024 election.
The Miami Herald initially reported these changes, but Donalds’ campaign has not commented on the adjustments.
Responses and Political Dynamics
David Jolly criticized Donalds, highlighting his past support for Trump and anticipating joint campaign appearances. A White House spokesperson stated Trump remains a strong leader for the Republican Party and emphasized choosing Trump’s agenda over opposing policies.
Polling Insights
Recent polls indicate a competitive race. A St. Pete Polls survey found Donalds at 44% and Jolly at 43%, with a margin of error of 3.2 points. A Change Research poll showed Jolly leading 47% to 44%. However, a James Madison Institute poll had Donalds ahead 45% to 38%, and the University of North Florida poll showed him leading 46% to 41%.
Shifting Republican Tactics
Other Republicans also distance themselves from Trump. Kentucky’s Representative Andy Barr and Southern California’s Representative Young Kim removed Trump references from their sites. Florida’s Representative María Elvira Salazar expressed concern over Trump’s immigration policies, and Iowa’s Representative Ashley Hinson disagreed with Trump on the Iran conflict, seeking relief from high fuel prices.
Trump’s Approval Ratings
Trump’s approval ratings are low, with an American Research Poll showing 29% approval and 68% disapproval. YouGov and The Economist reported a 35% approval rate, while the Reuters/Ipsos poll found a 32% approval rate with 66% disapproving.
Future Outlook
Political forecasters favor Donalds, with The Cook Political Report rating the race as Likely Republican and Sabato’s Crystal Ball as Lean Republican. Jolly has declined to debate Donalds. Further voting details will be available after October 4, as per Florida’s secretary of state office.
