Disneyland Remains Open Amid Chemical Incident Nearby
Disneyland Resort continues to operate as usual despite a chemical incident at a nearby aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California. The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) has identified a potential leak or explosion risk at a pressurized storage tank at GKN Aerospace, creating a toxic threat to surrounding communities.
Officials discovered a potential crack in the 34,000-gallon tank of methyl methacrylate, a flammable chemical used in plastics manufacturing. This finding led to emergency measures and concerns of severe structural damage in the event of an explosion. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency, deploying 785 state and local responders and requesting federal support.
Disneyland, located approximately five miles from the affected facility, has stated it is not within the evacuation zone. Visitors are advised to stay informed of road closures and travel disruptions, possibly affecting access to the resort. Guests can follow updates on Disneyland’s social media and the OCFA’s official channels.
Chemical Risk Details
The emergency response was initiated on May 21 when the tank began venting vapors, raising the possibility of a rupture or explosion. Methyl methacrylate can cause irritation to eyes, skin, and the respiratory system.
Fire Chief TJ McGovern clarified that only one crack in the tank is confirmed. Atmospheric monitoring shows no active leakage, though peeling weather stripping was noted on the tank’s exterior.
Public Safety Measures
Mandatory evacuations impact approximately 50,000 residents in Garden Grove. Established shelters aid those displaced by the incident. GKN Aerospace stated they are actively working to mitigate risks and resolve the situation safely.
Evacuation orders cover areas between Ball Road, Trask Avenue, Valley View Street, and Dale Street. Local authorities continue to manage the situation with an emphasis on community safety.
