President Donald Trump has faced backlash after sharing a meme depicting former President Barack Obama in a mugshot. The AI-generated image was posted on Trump’s social media platform, showcasing Obama holding an arrest placard that reads ‘Barack Hussein Obama’. The image forms part of a Brady Bunch-style grid, labeled ‘The Shady Bunch’, with figures such as former FBI Director James Comey included.
Trump accompanied the post with comments characterizing the depicted individuals as a ‘bad (Sick!) group of people’ and accusing them of causing damage through ‘Weaponization!’. Despite receiving around 25,000 likes and over 8,000 shares on Trump’s platform, the post received mixed reactions elsewhere.
Why It Matters
Trump has a history of endorsing or amplifying the idea of Obama’s arrest. Recently, he shared claims of Democrat election interference, concluding with the demand, ‘Arrest them all…But first Barack Obama.’ Moreover, Trump has posted other AI-generated content, such as a video showing Obama arrested in the Oval Office.
These posts relate to Trump’s ‘Obamagate’ allegations, asserting improper investigations into Trump’s 2016 campaign by Obama-era officials. Although Trump calls it the ‘biggest political crime in American history’, investigations found no evidence supporting illegal surveillance directed by Obama.
Critics express concern that such posts risk spreading misinformation, muddying the distinction between reality and fiction, particularly when depicting former presidents undergoing arrest processes. As a 2025 Emerson College poll indicated, 47 percent of Americans trust information from Trump’s administration, and 46 percent trust social media information.
Supporters argue that these posts are more political satire, reinforcing Trump’s claims of wrongdoing by the Obama administration.
Trump’s AI Controversy
Trump’s use of AI-created content continues to stir controversy. In February, he faced backlash for sharing a manipulated video depicting Obama using imagery condemned for racial stereotypes. In April, criticism followed Trump’s depiction as a Jesus-like figure in a deleted AI-generated image, supposedly portraying him as a doctor.
These controversies amplify concerns over Trump’s endorsement of AI-generated media, especially when altering historical figures or symbolic imagery.
What To Know
The ‘Shady Bunch’ meme provoked a strong reaction from many critics. Melanie D’Arrigo, Executive Director for the Campaign for New York Health, mocked Trump’s post, highlighting his own official mugshot and convictions. Other social media users, like @JRa1amrez, pointed out Trump’s use of AI-generated mugshots despite possessing a real one.
Jennifer Erin Valent, an author critical of Trump, commented on the frivolity of altering historical narratives. Jim Stewartson, a podcaster, accused Trump of indulging in an ‘alternate reality’. Rosalind Garcia expressed disapproval, connecting the post to vindictive prosecution.
