The Chicago Blackhawks are in a shortened training camp, needing to quickly build chemistry and shake off rust. The new season begins on September 29 in Las Vegas. For rookie winger Roman Kantserov and other newcomers, time is limited to adjust.
Kantserov, a 22-year-old Russian, is actively fostering relationships with his new teammates. He communicates regularly, particularly with Patrick Kane and Frank Nazar. He’s practicing on the top line alongside Nazar at center and Kane on the right wing.
If Coach (Jeff Blashill is) talking about how we play our drills, if I don’t understand, I just ask (and) they help me.Kantserov shared about his experience.
During a recent practice, Patrick Kane noted Kantserov’s strong skills and willingness to learn. Nazar also praised his ability to compete and manage the puck.
Kantserov’s transition from the KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk is expected to be smoother due to his recent performance. His 64 points, including 36 goals, were league records for players under 22.
He acknowledges differences in playing style between the Russian and American leagues. Challenges lie in the faster pace and increased strength of opponents. Nevertheless, Kantserov approaches these with dedication and sees his role as an opportunity.
Coach Jeff Blashill appreciates Kantserov’s hockey IQ and efficiency. He emphasizes letting Kantserov play his natural game without added pressure.
During a preseason game against the Minnesota Wild, Kantserov nearly scored his first NHL goal. Despite nerves before the game, his enthusiasm to begin his NHL journey with the Hawks was evident.
