Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of mindfulness-based stress reduction, suggests that an effective response to stress involves slowing down and paying close attention. He explains that true awareness extends to seeing both the positive and negative aspects of life without being trapped by them.
The concepts discussed are part of much broader content available in NPR’s podcast, Life Kit, which offers practical advice on subjects ranging from exercise to parenting. Moreover, individuals interested in these topics can subscribe to the Life Kit newsletter for regular updates.
Kabat-Zinn began developing mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) over 40 years ago, working with chronic pain patients. He focused on empowering patients to actively participate in their healing through meditation. Studies have shown that mindfulness meditation improves health outcomes, and these techniques are now used globally in healthcare settings.
Defining Mindfulness
Shereen Marisol Meraji described mindfulness as the awareness that arises when paying attention intentionally in the present moment without judgment. Kabat-Zinn confirmed this definition, emphasizing the significant role that awareness plays in navigating challenges both personally and as a species.
People often turn to mindfulness when they feel something is missing in their lives. Kabat-Zinn himself was interested from an early age in understanding what it means to be human and how to navigate life deliberately rather than passively.
The Role of Meditation
Kabat-Zinn describes mindfulness as a meditation practice fostering intimacy with awareness. This involves learning to stay present rather than existing in constant distraction. On average, people check their phones 260 times a day, diverting attention from the present moment. Being more present improves personal interactions and response to the world’s complexities.
Kabat-Zinn argues that the world currently faces a condition resembling a chronic disease. Therefore, practices used for individual healing are applicable on a global scale.
Misconceptions About Meditation
A common misconception is that meditation requires emptying the mind to eliminate stress and emotional pain. Kabat-Zinn counters this view, suggesting that meditation doesn’t involve reaching a special state. Instead, it involves understanding that awareness is always available, allowing people to continuously reconnect with the present moment.
“Following a thread of awareness is like befriending one’s own heart,” he stated.
Practicing Mindfulness
Kabat-Zinn offers guidance for beginners on breath-based meditation. He emphasizes the importance of starting in the present moment, acknowledging that the concept of “now” carries a timeless aspect. Meditation helps individuals engage with their breath, enhancing awareness of ongoing thoughts and emotions without trying to exclude them.
The practice involves constant redirection to the present anytime the mind wanders. This ongoing exercise helps cultivate wisdom and recognize the current state of mind.
The real meditation, as Kabat-Zinn notes, is living life fully aware of each moment. This involves an open heart and mind to life’s range of experiences—joyful, stressful, and painful. By fostering openness through mindfulness, individuals can achieve both profound healing and personal growth.
