President Donald Trump is gearing up for a significant address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, seeking positive outcomes amidst recent legal and political challenges. With his approval ratings dipping below 40%, partly due to concerns over the economic impacts of the Iran war, Trump’s visit comes at a critical time.
The president has faced controversy after barring CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, prompting these organizations to pursue legal action for access restoration. As the midterm elections approach, Trump aims to achieve diplomatic victories at the U.N. before hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.
In his speech, Trump plans to present himself as a peacemaker, focusing on peace agreements he has brokered while staunchly defending his Iran policy. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz mentioned Trump’s intent to highlight the administration’s efforts to address global issues directly, particularly emphasizing the prevention of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. Leaders are anticipated to pay close attention to Trump’s remarks, given his history of making headlines during these addresses.
Trump’s prior appearances at the U.N. have been notable. In 2017, he threatened North Korea with destruction. In 2018, he claimed his administration’s unparalleled accomplishments, eliciting laughter from some leaders. Last year, he criticized the U.N. harshly, questioning its purpose and potential.
This year, Trump may emphasize a new security deal with Denmark regarding Greenland and defend his actions against Iran. His speech immediately precedes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s address, adding a layer of tension.
Beyond speeches, the real diplomatic efforts are set for private meetings. Trump is scheduled to meet with several key figures, including Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Gulf leaders, and Venezuela’s interim President Delcy RodrÃguez. Richard Fontaine, Center for a New American Security, underscores the significance of these private meetings over public sessions at the U.N.
The U.N. Security Council struggles with reaching consensus on crucial matters, a point of concern. Artificial intelligence regulations are another significant agenda item, with leaders pursuing a global agreement on the issue as China’s President Xi Jinping will not attend the U.N. gathering. Instead, he will join Trump in Washington for a state dinner, shifting global attention there, according to Heather Conley, a former Bush State Department official.
