On Monday, a critical technology outage at a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facility resulted in significant disruptions to flight operations across the Northeast. The incident affected all airlines, including United Airlines, at Newark Liberty International Airport.
A spokesperson for the FAA stated in an email to Newsweek that flights bound for Newark were either held at their departure points or diverted elsewhere. The spokesperson assured that once the issue is resolved, efforts will be made to safely transport passengers to their destinations. Additionally, a travel waiver was issued to accommodate flexible travel plans.
The outage occurred at the Philadelphia TRACON facility, leading to immediate ground stops at several major airports, including Newark Liberty International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Teterboro Airport. The delays subsequently extended to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “This is unacceptable in America. We have solutions, need resources and let’s fix it.”
Impacted Flights
Newark Liberty International Airport
Newark experienced significant disruptions, with 282 flight cancellations and 208 delays. CNBC reported that international flights from Iceland, France, Spain, Greece, and Egypt were affected.
Philadelphia International Airport
Directly impacted by the outage at Philadelphia TRACON, Philadelphia International Airport saw 124 cancellations and 395 delays, according to FlightAware.com.
Teterboro Airport
The FAA halted flights into Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, causing prolonged delays as the FAA worked on resolving the issues.
JFK and LaGuardia
New York City’s major airports, JFK and LaGuardia, also faced ground stops and delays due to increased air traffic congestion.
What Happens Next
The FAA attributed the disruption to issues with radio frequencies at the Philadelphia TRACON facility. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford informed CBS New York that both the primary circuit and a backup line at the facility failed. A damaged fiber connection between New Brunswick and Newark was identified as the cause.
Repair efforts could span several hours, and teams are installing a new circuit. An initial attempt to restore normal operations was unsuccessful. Service restoration efforts were underway for JFK and LaGuardia, while Newark, Philadelphia, and Teterboro faced ongoing restrictions.
Passengers are advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight updates. Even after resolving the technical issue, delays will persist as airlines manage diversions and scheduling disruptions.
