Rapper Macklemore is gaining a new supporter amid ongoing criticism over his pro-Palestinian advocacy during his opening act for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., recently addressed this issue in a fundraising message to her supporters, criticizing billionaire Robert Kraft’s alleged role in Macklemore’s removal from the tour.
Ocasio-Cortez stated, “Billionaire stadium owner, Robert Kraft, did not like Macklemore, a Grammy-winning rapper, saying ‘Free Palestine’ on stage — so he made calls and the artist got pulled off of Ed Sheeran’s tour.” She emphasized the broader implications of this incident, arguing that influential figures, such as stadium owners, can threaten individuals’ careers to suppress discussions on significant topics, in this case, the ongoing situation in Gaza.
The congresswoman pointed out that the repercussions faced by Macklemore highlight a larger struggle between different social classes. She stated, “Oligarchs and billionaires could just as easily prevent people from speaking out about AI, workers’ rights, or any issue they don’t like. That is what makes this a dangerous precedent.”
She called on her supporters to voice their opposition to this abuse of power and keep attention on Kraft’s use of influence to control public discourse in America. The message concluded with Ocasio-Cortez urging for protection of free speech and opposing billionaires who aim to silence dissent or peaceful protest.
Macklemore, known for his hit “Thrift Shop,” voiced “Free Palestine” at a concert in New Jersey on September 4. He performed a song inspired by anti-Israel protests and expressed solidarity with regions under conflict, mentioning Palestine, Lebanon, Cuba, Congo, Sudan, and Iran.
Following these events, Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, reportedly threatened to cancel Sheeran’s show. Despite warnings to desist, Macklemore repeated his “Free Palestine” message the next night, clarifying that his remarks targeted Israel’s policies, not the Jewish faith.
The backlash from pro-Israel groups and fellow artists led to Macklemore’s exclusion from Sheeran’s tour. Kraft explained to NBC News that his actions responded to a harmful public narrative affecting Jewish communities. He expressed a willingness to talk with Macklemore, stating, “Our goal is the same — peace for all people, an end to suffering, and an end to all hate.” Kraft also contributed $2 million to aid Palestinians amid the controversy.
Despite political tensions, Kraft maintains connections with former President Trump, although their relationship reportedly cooled after the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Kraft supported Trump’s first inauguration and attended a presidential box event at the Kennedy Center earlier this year.
