A Florida woman, Tiffany Raulerson, was recording a serene swim in the Suwannee River to share with her friends. Her peaceful film session took an unexpected turn when she noticed she was not the only one in the water. Despite her familiarity with Florida’s rich wildlife, Raulerson was taken aback when a fish leapt from the river, revealing itself to be a rare sturgeon.
The Suwannee River is known for its significant population of Gulf sturgeon, one of about 27 sturgeon species worldwide. Many of these species are critically endangered. Raulerson’s encounter occurred during a family visit to the river, a spot they hold dear. The chance timing and her ability to capture the moment on video made the incident memorable.
Raulerson posted the video on TikTok under her handle @tiffanyraulerson6 on September 8. The clip has since garnered over 38 million views. In the video, Raulerson’s surprise is evident as she turns to the camera with a look of disbelief, captioning it, “Ain’t no way, man.” To Newsweek, she explained that while Gulf sturgeon are common in the area, capturing one on film was particularly striking due to the timing.
Understanding Sturgeons
Sturgeons have existed since the age of dinosaurs. Several species live in North America. Gulf sturgeon, for instance, can reach lengths of 6 to 8 feet and weigh nearly 200 pounds. Seeing one unexpectedly is startling for swimmers.
Despite their size, sturgeons do not prey on humans. Their diet includes small aquatic organisms. Still, sturgeon sometimes leap from the water, as seen in Raulerson’s video. Their large size and speed can pose a danger to unsuspecting swimmers or boaters nearby.
For those who encounter a sturgeon or other large wildlife, it’s safest to give them space and avoid disturbing them. If feeling unsafe, calmly exiting the water is advisable to prevent unwanted interactions.
Social Media Reactions
Raulerson’s video fueled a dynamic debate among viewers. People expressed awe at the fish’s size and agility. Some questioned the species and the video’s authenticity.
“Seeing the range of reactions highlights the impact of such a natural moment shared online,” Raulerson noted. Her clip encapsulated the unpredictability of the Suwannee River, where even familiar places can offer unexpected surprises.
