Officials from the United States and China are set to meet in Washington this week to discuss enhancing transparency in artificial intelligence (AI). The talks aim to establish better communication regarding AI-related national security incidents.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed on Sunday the plan for a joint “notification mechanism” to monitor such incidents. He made this announcement during a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York City.
Bessent, along with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, engaged in preliminary discussions with Lifeng ahead of the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The summit is expected to address various bilateral issues, focusing significantly on AI and its implications on national security.
This initiative comes as both nations recognize the growing importance of AI in strategic domains and the need for a cooperative approach to manage potential risks.
