Texas Senate Race Becomes More Competitive
James Talarico, a Democratic State Representative, is gaining ground in the Texas Senate race. Prediction markets and election forecasters have started to see the contest as competitive, despite the state’s Republican history.
Prediction Markets and Forecast Updates
Kalshi, a prediction market, currently gives Talarico a 59% chance of winning the November election against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who stands at 41%. Another prediction market, Polymarket, shows similar odds, with Talarico at 60% and Paxton at 41%. These balances can exceed 100% due to market spreads.
Fox News’ latest Power Rankings forecast has moved the Texas Senate race from “Lean Republican” to “Toss-Up,” aligning with the Cook Political Report, which has also updated its classification from “Lean Republican” to “Toss-Up.” Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin model now categorizes Texas as “Lean Democrat,” giving Talarico roughly a 70% chance of victory over Paxton, who has about 30%.
Factors Influencing Talarico’s Edge
In an August 25 post, Nate Silver noted that while Texas remains “a very red state,” his model considers Paxton’s numerous scandals and Talarico’s significant fundraising efforts. This analysis provides a slight “candidate quality” advantage for Talarico, boosted by polling evidence.
Recent polling indicates competitiveness with RealClearPolling showing Talarico at 47.6% and Paxton at 45%. Newsweek has reached out to both campaigns for comments and awaits responses.
Campaign Trail and Social Media Exchanges
The race’s competitiveness has led to lively exchanges between the candidates. Talarico recently pointed out a spelling error in a now-deleted post from Paxton, who referred to Cypress, Texas, as “Cyprus,” the Mediterranean island.
Talarico responded, “It’s Cypress, not ‘Cyprus.’ But given your luxury vacations in Europe, it’s no surprise you don’t know Texas.”
Historical Context and Strategic Stances
If Talarico wins, he would be the first Democrat to secure a Senate seat in Texas since 1988. Historically, Republicans have dominated, winning every presidential election in Texas since 1980. Despite this background, Talarico continues to challenge Paxton. He defeated Senator John Cornyn in the GOP primary runoff in May.
Paxton aligns with President Donald Trump, who endorsed his Senate campaign. Talarico portrays himself as a faith-driven Democrat focused on affordability and economic issues.
Paxton enters the election with a complex record, including a 2023 impeachment and later acquittal, a resolved securities-fraud case in 2024, and allegations of bribery and corruption. Paxton has denied any wrongdoing in these situations.
