Effective Recovery Strategies for Adults Over 35 Post-Workout
The post-exercise phase is crucial for adults, especially as muscles become less responsive to protein and muscle-building signals with age. Fitness coach Jacob Zemer emphasizes recovery for his clients, aged 35 to 55, to repair tissue and maintain strength.
Sleep Well for Better Recovery
Quality sleep between seven to nine hours is vital for recovery. To enhance sleep, avoid eating close to bedtime, establish a consistent sleep schedule, refrain from screen use before bed, and maintain a dark, cool bedroom environment.
Regular Bloodwork Checks
Regular bloodwork helps detect recovery-interfering issues by monitoring hormones and body functions. Recommended screenings include checks for high blood pressure, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
Heat Therapy Benefits
Heat exposure can aid recovery by improving circulation to muscles. A hot shower post-workout can increase heat proteins that improve muscle recovery.
Importance of Stretching
Strength training shortens muscles; stretching re-lengthens them and maintains mobility. Stretching ensures a full range of motion after workouts.
Fuel and Hydrate Properly
Post-workout protein intake is essential for muscle repair. A recommended 20 to 40 grams of high-quality protein aids rebuilding. Hydration before workouts is critical; insufficient water leads to poor performance.
Allow Time for Stress Relief
Post-exercise, the body needs time to lower cortisol levels and relax. Eating well and resting help muscles and nerves recover. If recovery spans a week, the training intensity was likely too high.
Understanding Soreness
Normal soreness post-exercise should last around a day. Extended soreness or joint pain indicates excessive training. Gradually increase workout intensity and reduce if needed for effective recovery.
Exercise-induced endorphins can mask pain during workouts, which may lead to increased soreness later. Adjusting workout intensity improves recovery and reduces the risk of long-term muscle pain.
