In Philadelphia, Ed Sheeran experienced a flood of emotions as he apologized to fans after criticism erupted when Macklemore was removed from his tour. During his return to the stage at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran acknowledged the situation.
He began, “I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes. I’m so, so sorry. I don’t want to disappoint fans.” Sheeran pointed out, “I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division, about humanity, not politics.” He emphasized that the issue at hand is humanitarian.
Demonstrators gathered outside his Philadelphia concert, holding signs. Sheeran addressed the situation in Israel and Gaza, expressing his heartbreak over the loss of civilian lives and the ongoing injustice in the West Bank. He is engaging with others to understand and contribute positively.
During the show, Sheeran expressed uncertainty about the audience’s reaction. “I didn’t know if I would have things thrown at me,” he admitted. He modified the usual setup, removing the B stage for caution. Still, he vowed to continue his tour, stressing the unifying power of music.
Pro-Palestinian protesters appeared at Lincoln Financial Field, waving flags and chanting. This came after Macklemore’s removal from the tour due to his “Free Palestine” act at MetLife Stadium. Sheeran clarified that the decision was made by concert promoters and venues, not him.
Sheeran stated his disagreement with the conflict’s impact on both sides, labeling it “a human tragedy” in a social media post. Macklemore later mentioned that Sheeran informed him that Robert Kraft led a group of stadium owners who opposed Macklemore’s performance.
