Piddington Parish Council Considers Joining United States Amid Asylum Seeker Housing Concerns

The parish council chair of Piddington, a small English village with about 350 residents, revealed plans to formally request joining the United States if the UK government proceeds with a proposal to house 1,250 male asylum seekers at a nearby site. The chair, Tim McNally, spoke to Newsweek and expressed intentions to proceed with the request unless the asylum plan is halted, stating conversations have occurred with President Trump regarding the issue.

The 51st State?

McNally mentioned that the parish council might seek the support of the United States to become their 51st state. The council has sent a letter to President Trump and a dossier to the American embassy to present their case. Parish councilor Joe Marshall supports the proposal, believing the move draws parallels to how America felt 250 years ago regarding taxes without representation.

Councilor Michael Nixon added that while there hasn’t been direct communication with the American government, substantial support from the US public has been noted. Emails from across the US have welcomed Piddington, recognizing the village’s initiative.

Independence Referendum

In a symbolic vote held on Tuesday, Piddington decided to secede from the UK, pursuing self-determination following the proposed asylum center plans. Although the referendum lacks legal authority, it saw a 91.8 percent turnout with 285 voting for independence and 26 against. The decision for the vote occurred shortly after the council was informed of the government’s plans in late June.

Councilor Susannah Parden voiced safety concerns, emphasizing anxiety particularly among women and children. The proposed asylum center’s proximity to the village poses security worries, as fears about the safety of roaming asylum seekers remain unaddressed.

Marshall highlighted the village’s low crime rate changes due to increased security concerns. The village comprises elderly residents, children, and women who frequent playgrounds and parks, raising personal safety issues.

Public Reactions and Government Response

Rachel Marsh opposed the independence vote, calling it a publicity stunt. On BBC Radio 4, UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that plans remain unchanged but acknowledged community frustration. Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed migrant crossings, emphasizing efforts to reduce numbers, noting crossings are at a seven-year low.

Immigration Tensions

The housing plan for asylum seekers ignites broader immigration debates in the UK. Tensions have heightened, especially regarding asylum seekers arriving via English Channel small boats. Demonstrations, including blocking access to Dover’s port, have occurred, and the immigration sceptic party Reform UK continues to rank highly in national polls.
