A mist lingered during Northwestern’s final game at Martin Stadium, occasionally turning into rain that drenched the 12,023 spectators. Despite the unfavorable weather, the Wildcats’ defense thrived, showcasing their strengths against Colorado. Northwestern secured a decisive 41-7 win, emphasizing their defensive prowess.
Interceptions by Braden Turner and Ore Adeyi, along with fumble recoveries by Robert Fitzgerald and Braydon Brus, highlighted Northwestern’s defense. Colorado managed 348 yards but scored only once in the third quarter. Brus emphasized the defensive strategy: “A big part of our defense, we call it TNT: Tackling and takeaways. We focus on it during practice and think ‘ball’ throughout the game.”
Quarterback Aidan Chiles excelled, completing 17 of 22 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for two scores. Running back Joseph Himon II caught all three touchdown passes, totaling 46 receiving yards and adding 28 rushing yards. Wide receiver Griffin Wilde contributed with five catches for 85 yards. This performance ensured a memorable farewell to Martin Stadium as Northwestern prepares to move to the new Ryan Field, scheduled to open on October 2 against Penn State.
Before the game, a video surfaced showing Colorado players using expletives about the stadium. However, it was the Wildcats who silenced the visitors with their dominant play. Northwestern coach David Braun expressed gratitude to the operations team for their support during this transitional period. “We definitely sent it out the right way,” Braun stated, expressing enthusiasm for the new era at Ryan Field.
Looking ahead, Northwestern faces a significant challenge against defending national champion Indiana. Coach Braun, whose contract was recently extended through 2031, remains optimistic, emphasizing taking each game day by day. “We’re built for the schedule ahead, as long as we remain focused,” he stated.
This victory also showcased Northwestern’s revamped offense under new coordinator Chip Kelly, totaling 423 yards against Colorado. Despite an early bye week, the team maintained focus, demonstrating their preparedness.
Northwestern’s first touchdown came late in the first quarter when Chiles scored on a 1-yard run. This followed a fumble recovery by Fitzgerald after Michael Kilbane forced a Colorado turnover. Despite offensive challenges, two defensive penalties kept the drive alive.
The game wasn’t without setbacks. Offensive tackle Ezomo Oratokhai suffered a lower-body injury, leaving the field on a cart. However, Northwestern’s defense continued to capitalize on Colorado mistakes, with Brus recovering another fumble.
Turner’s interception set up Northwestern’s first passing touchdown, connecting Chiles with Himon for an 18-yard score. Defensive stops continued to stifle Colorado, maintaining Northwestern’s momentum.
Though Colorado managed a touchdown in the third quarter, Northwestern swiftly responded. An eight-play drive concluded with Chiles’ 25-yard pass to Himon, followed by another touchdown catch by Himon, securing the game.
Reflecting on the win, Himon expressed excitement about returning to Ryan Field. “It’s been special playing here by the lake,” he said. “But we’re eager to get back and have full support from our fans.”
